So I was wondering if I can take out my laptop hard drive (with an os) and use it on my desktop so i can play my steam games that I installed on it. My desktop has windows 8. But I'm not using the hard drive for its os. I also want to then plug it back into the laptop later. Will this affect the hard drive and it's os from being verified later when put back into the laptop.

Simple (i want to):

1. Take hard drive from laptop (with win 10)
2. Put into desktop (with win 8) (ik i can I've checked the sata)
3. Use it to access files
4. Put it back into laptop and it working correctly after.

I've never tried, but you might be able to. As long as you don't accidentally boot into the laptop drive on your desktop. Either windows will read the laptop drive like any other drive, or it will see it as drive with an os on it and ignore it.

Simply put, no you can't.

For one Windows OS serial key(the thing responsible for Windows Is Activated message in System report) is tied to the motherboard. You place it in the other computer and there will be validation issues and eventually you will be locked out of the PC.

Secondly there are drivers to think about. Your OS on that HDD understands that laptop because it has all the necessary drivers for that hardware. You remove it from its "native" environment and there will be driver issues.

Assuming you could someone would never have to buy an OS again. They could simply transfer their existing HDD from one PC to the next. It doesn't work that way. Back when XP was around the rules were a LOT more relaxed.
