Hi guys - hoping someone will be able to help, it's driving me crazy!
My friend gave me his old pc - he wiped the hard drive before hand and thought he'd broken it. I don't know if it's broken or if he wiped the OS.

It starts up but doesn't load the operating system. It says 'detecting drivers; done; no drivers found'. Then it gets stuck saying 'Reboot and select proper boot device'.

I've tried with other hard drives - one with Windows 7.. it gets stuck in a loop of 'automatically detecting errors', which are 'attempt write to read only' then 'IR QL not less or equal' and then 'driver corrupted expool'. It never gets past this stage.

So I downloaded Ubuntu and made a bootable USB. It comes up with a message saying 'page dumped because: non zero map count, BUG: bad state in process swapper, pfn: 314839.

Now I'm out of ideas! Does anyone know what it could be or what I should do?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply! Ah, doesn't sound good then. I don't have a copy of Windows so it would mean having to buy one - which I don't really want to do if it's an issue with the mobo. Is there any way to know for sure if it is the mobo? Or is it just process of elimination - like if a fresh install of Windows doesn't work then it must be the mobo? And if this was going to work, wouldn't have Ubuntu loaded?
