Hello, I have a question: I have an lga775 socket, what cpu should I buy to pair it up with the rx 460 so I could play Mass Effect Andromeda when it comes out.

Solution
If you have a G41 board with a S775, then none of the i3's will fit. You'll have to get a new motherboard to go with that. The G41 chipset should support any C2Q out there, though I think the Q8200 or Q8400 had an issue with some of the G41 boards not picking up the multiplier correctly. No clue if that board had that issue or not.
It depends on your motherboard. Not every 775 CPU will work with every 775 motherboard.

That said, there are no 775 CPUs that even meet the minimum requirements for Mass Effect Andromeda. If your board supports the Core2Quad Q9xxx CPUs you might be able to play it, but chances are good your framerates will be very poor.

that and the fact that those cpu's are expensive when found new and not worth the money for the performance they give. if you can find a used cpu on ebay or something like that, it might be worth it. but that is a big might.

but you'd have to give us the motherboard model so we can check what cpu it supports.

915, 925, and (most) 945/955 boards won't work with the newer C2D/C2Qs. There were a number of second gen 945 boards that could handle C2D and some C2Qs. The older 65nm chips worked better, the newer 45nm chips might have issues. If you have a 965, 975, or P3x/p4x chipset then you should be able to handle any C2D/C2Q though even there there are some exceptions if my memory serves.

As mentioned above even with the C2Q 9550 it's below the minimum specs. You would honestly get better frame rates with a newer core series CPU, even if it's a lowly i3. C2Qs are simply really old now. You can run a program called CPUz to figure out what motherboard you have if you don't know.

I have the MSI G41M-P23 (MS-7592) motherboard but I guess I will have to invest in a i3 skylake. Thank you all for the answers.

Just for comparisons, my Nephew is running a Q9650 overclocked to 4.2 GHz on an Asus Rampage Extreme X48 motherboard, 8 GB DDR3 1600, two SSD's in RAID0, and an overclocked GTX 1060 6GB.

Here's his PassMark CPU score O/C'd @ 4.2 compared to newer processors at stock clocks with similar scores:

i5 6400 - 6,550
i5 3450 - 6,448
i5 2500K - 6,438
i5 4440 - 6,404
Q9650 @ 4.2 - 6,342
FX6300 - 6,330
i5 2500 - 6,232
i7 975 - 6,214
i5 3340 - 5,998

3DMark Time Spy - 3,929
3DMark Fire Strike - 10,321

This is just an example of the performance that later LGA 775 parts are capable of delivering when pushed to their upper limits.
