I have a HDD from an hp dv7-4083cl that gives a ef1 (hdd failed to initiate) error code in POST. However, when I stick it into my g7-2269wm it does boot - albeit insanely slowly. I can honestly say I haven't experienced this issue before so anyone have any ideas?? I plan on replacing the drive anyways but unsure if I should keep this one as a just in case backup or just nuke it and move on.

Thanks

Hey there, kamikazepyro9.

It's quite lucky that you're able to boot to Windows by using the drive of another computer with a different laptop. So, if you haven't backed up your files, I'd suggest that you do so, whenever you have the chance. After that go ahead and download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool and test it for errors and bad sectors, to see what's the situation with it.
If it turns out that the drive is at fault, then you could simply replace it as you've suggested. However, if the drive is not to blame, then it might be something else, like a SATA port or cable problem, or an issue with the motherboard.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Does Toshiba have a HDD diagnostic tool? I've never been able to find one by them.

If data is important then take backup as soon possible. You can never predict hard drive behavior so it is always beneficial to have a backup. One of my friends was into this similar situation and the hard drive was not even booted into another PC. The reason was faulty HD. I took help of professional data recovery experts though I got complete recovery of data but it was little painful. Thankfully you are not facing this, so I would suggest you to make a backup of your important data. Check for motherboard whether it is fine or not.
