I built a computer last week for a family member. At first I was able to use the case USB to use the mouse and keyboard but I tried to install a program from a pen drive bu the computer would no tread it. So I tried installing the drives using MSI's disc that came with the MB. After two tries (which non finished) of installation, I tried to download them from the MSI website and then install. After I started installing the drives, the mouse froze and it hasn't work on the computer ever since. It does work to enter the BIOS but when it enter the OS (Windows 7 Professional) it stops working. I have tried different USB ports on the case and the MB but it still didn't work. I even changed the mouse to the one with the green connector and it did not work. I'm getting desperate because nothing works.

Here are some specs (just in case):
Intel Core i7-6700
MSI H110M Eco MB
16GB RAM
256 Crucial SSD
Windows 7 Professional (I got a key from Kinguin and downloaded an ISO for the OS)

Please help!

one tip a friend (retired Microsoft engineer and a EE) just gave me on mine that might help with you

we can't tell if my motherboard might have fried the usb controller on the board or if it's windows. Even though i've cloned two good clone copies of my OS drive back to my OS drive, my usb ports are not working for five seagate ext HDDs or my flash drives. But oddly a sixth seagate drive will work, as well as my 16 yr old (usb 1.0) canon scanner and two different blu-ray external drives work. All my seagates and flash drives work fine on other computers, so it's either my software or the mobo. He said the cloned copies probably didn't copy or clone back to windows fully, as most of the clone software now does not do a complete clone...
i'm researching a similiar issue and that's what brought me - and i'm starting to believe mine is a burnt usb controller on the mobo
but what may help, if you go up to "My Computer" , right clik and go to properties, then in the left column, go to advanced system settings, then under Startup and Recovery clik on "settings"
at the bottom, select "Kernel memory dump", copy the dump file location to a word doc, then select "small memory dump" and copy that dump file's location to the word doc
Go to your Start orb, and insert one of the file's location in the search box, and copy it to your desktop. Do the same with the other dump file.

You'll not be able to open them as they are .dmp files. You can let windows search the internet for how to open them, and waste 35 minutes like i did, or go straight to windows debugger utility https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/windows-driver-kit, scroll down and download the WinDBG file at "Get Debugging Tools for Windows (WinDbg) (from the SDK)"
open it, keep track of where it installs, it usually installs on the Program files x86 tree, then look for Windows kits, then open the "10" folder (there won't be but two folders, then the "Debuggers" folder, then the x64 folder, once that's open, scroll all the way to the bottom of that tree or folder, and you'll see winbdg.exe. Clik on it, when it's open, drag the first memory.dmp file into it, and it'll open. Copy and paste that to a word doc, and then open the other mini-dump file and again copy it to a word doc.

There hopefully will be something there to tell you what happened.

Mine showed error from the iusb3hub.sys file and the iusb3xch.sys files, but even after copying and pasting new files from a fresh download from Asus's web, it didn't cure my problem. neither did cloning back two different copies of the OS drive from when my USB ports were working, and reviewing a similiar thread, i'm coming to the conclusion my usb controller (southbridge) is bad, which is a hardware issue.

but the above may put you on track to an answer

I can't use mouse or keyboard to enter MyComputer. I'm beginning to think it's the OS because I can enter the BIOS but when the OS boots up, the mouse and keyboard stop working.

we can't tell if my motherboard might have fried the usb controller on the board or if it's windows. He said the cloned copies probably didn't copy or clone back to windows fully, as most of the clone software now does not do a complete clone, ie it will read the files on the target drive and if it is identified as the same driver (in this case we're focused on usb and controller drivers) then it won't clone the copy to the target drive

so the suggestion he gave me, take a blank drive - remove or disconnect the system's current OS drive as well as all other drives, and using either the emergency/repair disc i created when i first loaded windows or the actual windows disc itself, load it onto the blank harddrive. Not going to bother loading all my programs, apps etc, just barebones windows - but if usb ports come back, then it's windows - if not it's mobo (he's two states away so he can't check it for me in person).

but you might want to give that a try if you have a spare drive you can use, ie leave the OS drive alone

what made him feel it was software issue, was that, same as you, when the seagate drives that do not work are connected, they do show up in BIOS and are correctly identified in BIOS, ie Seagate expansion drive xxxx. Plus whenever i connect one of the non-functioning drives, i get that 2 tone sound telling something got connected, and when i connect to a USB 2.0 port, i get a little flag down in the bottom right of my screen saving "this device can perform or run faster connected to a USB 3.0 port

at least his suggestion will save me from having to do a complete re-install unnecessarily if it's the mobo.

hope that helps

I finally fixed the problem. I don't know why, and it may sound silly, but I think somehow the key was the problem. I went and formatted the SSD and installed Windows again. Before I entered the Windows key, I installed every driver I needed to install. After that I entered the key and it worked just fine. It didn't give me any other issues and every USB port worked fine again. I don't know if it had to do with the key or something, but I'm guessing I have to install the drivers first before the key (?).
