Greetings,

Firstly this is my first time posting on tom'sHardware, so forgive me if i'm in the wrong place.

So my problem starts with a harddrive I had in my laptop, one day the laptop wouldn't start up. I took it out and plugged into my desktop as an external. Disk management told me to initialize the drive before I could use it, so i tried to do so. However it was unsuccessful and gave me a "data error cyclic redundancy check" error.

So this is where i'm stuck. I cant format the drive because it hasn't been initialized and I cannot initialize it because of the data error.

I have found loads of data error solutions that simply say use the cmd promt to run a dskchk, this again doesn't work because the drive has no label. I have however used mountvol (or something along these lines) and tried it that way but it told me the drive couldn't open or something like that.

I have also found a program called Testdisk. This managed to find the 3 partitions on the drive, but honestly I don't entirely know how to use this program or if it is even able to solve my problem.

Thanks

Unfortunately it really sounds like the drive is done for. If the drive came with the laptop, that would mean that it's OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and if the laptop is still under warranty, it should be covered by the laptop manufacturer. If the drive was bought separately, it should be covered by the vendor you got it from and/or the HDD manufacturer. So those are you options for RMA.
Hey there, MurderFace. Welcome to tom'sHardware. :)

It really sounds like the drive might have failed. CRC (cyclic redundancy check) errors are a pretty bad sign and having in mind the fact that you're unable to initialize the drive at all, could mean the worst.
Try the drive with a different computer if possible or by connecting it internally via a standard SATA connection, to see if the same thing happens. You could also download an HDD diagnostic tool and test it for error, to see what's the situation with the drive, of course it the program is able to recognize it.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes.

Hi Boogieman,

I have downloaded the Hitachi HDD tool and it told me the surface test failed.
