Hi! I just wanted to build a new PC with Intel i5-6500 and RX 480 4GB.

Only one thing worries me: I want to get the MSI H170 Gaming M3 motherboard. However, in their website in the "Compatibility" section, it doesn't mention the RX 480. Is this going to be bad? Will the video card work good as intended? If yes, then what does the "compatibility" with a specific video card mean??

Here's the link to the motherboard's compatibility section:
https://ca.msi.com/Motherboard/support/H170-GAMING-M3.html#support-vga

Would appreciate any response!
Best regards.

I'd stay away from MSI mobos, they have poor QC (quality control), as far as compatible video cards, the 1151 mobos such as you will be using will be compatible with any PCI-E graphics card
The main thing that matters in a graphics card working is the slot. Almost all of today's motherboards have PCI-e slots in them which are compatible with almost all the GPUs made today. RX 480 isn't there because it's a new card and probably no one could find time to update it. Even GTX 1060 is not there. So don't worry about the compatibility, it will work perfectly.

This is not always true. There are times that some vender's GPU's that don't work on certain motherboard. While this is rare it does happen and you can never predict if it will or will not work unless you purchase on that is in the QVL.

The only Vender that is listed in that list is MSI itself, although it is not surprising because they made the board, so buying a R9 380X from Asus, as an example, does not ensure compatibility. This is because the only cards that were tested with that board were MSI's own cards and of course the ones directly from Nvidia and AMD.

In all likely hood it will work but there is not guaranty that the brand you buy will. I have personally seen one brand not work but the same card from another brand would.

Thanks for the answers, everyone!

@Tradesman1: I also thought the same about the 1151 mobos. Thanks! But one thing: I do own 2 MSI motherboards and they're great. I do not have any problem with them. One for gaming (Z170A M5 + i7-6700K) and the other one for home-use (H110M PRO-VD + i3-6100). As long as they are working good MSI will be my trusted brand.
