What should I upgrade next (gaming rig)?

Hi,

I have a smallish budget at this minute, and was looking at upgrading my graphics card. However, I've only actually upgraded my GPU and SSD since building in in 2012, so thought it may be worth asking for suggestions first.

Not being able to play No Man's Sky straight away due to my processor is what got me thinking (not that it was worth playing anyway).

My current spec is:

CPU- AMD Phenom II x4 965 – 3.4Ghz AM3 Black Edition CPU
GPU – Asus Nvidea Geforce GTX 760 2GB GDDR5
Motherboard – Asus M5A97
SSD – Samsung 840 Series 120GB SATA Solid State Drive
HDD – Western Digital 500GB SATAIII 6Bb/s 16MB Cache
PSU – Corsair CMPSU-600CXV2UK (600W)
RAM - 8GB DDR3

Current Budget - £230 (saved).

Plus my wife and I have £50 budgets for each other for Christmas, so I could potentially get a one off thing for £50, but don't want to add this to the £230 I have saved. I was thinking of maybe getting another 8BG of RAM, but not sure if that's worth it either?

I'm looking at getting a GTX 970, but not sure how much of a difference that will actually make? I can only really play games on medium settings these days, so obviously it's an upgrade. Is it really worth it though, with 4K and VR becoming more popular?

I think my motherboard is pretty dated now, as I can't SLI with it. I was originally going to get another GTX 760 and SLI them, but first found out that i may need more power, then found out that my motherboard doesn't support it anyway.

I run my OS from my SSD, but my games from the HDD, as it's too small to store them on really.

Sorry for the long post. I'm really interested in what people think though.

Thanks,

Chris

Solution
If you can only upgrade a bit at a time, get the GTX 1060, then change the CPU/Mobo/RAM to new generation, both AMD and Intel will have new CPUs out soon.

Cheers for the response.

What mobo and CPU would you recommend?

Would the extra ram be worth it?

I can't really sell my stuff first, unfortunately. Need a working PC for my uni work.

I was thinking the 970 as it outperforms the 10 series cards in my price range. You think this is a bad idea?

Everything would depend on how much you save but i would aim for an intel i5 and cant really make recommendation if it is a future upgrade as new series of CPUs and Mobos are coming out soon. As far as 970 what are you trying to get used ?? gtx1060 is about 12% faster than a 970.

Thanks for the ideas!

I think I'm going to get a GTX 1060 now, yeah. Followed by a new processor when I have enough.

What advantages would I actually get from upgrading my motherboard?

To upgrade your CPU you need to change the motherboard, so without a new motherboard, no further upgrades are possible.
