I am getting a machine together for my little brother lol (20+yrs old) will be used for gaming etc

He is not doing video editing etc only gaming and basic day to day stuff

would he see any difference in speed of his machine with 1033 vs 1866?

options are
8gb with 1866
12 gb (8gb 1866 and 4gb 1066 (2x2gb)

His current specs
i3
4gb 1033 or slower

new specs
i5 2500k
12gb possibly

I think the most graphic intensive game he owns I think is Ark he used to playing it on low and almost everything shut off lol

Do not mix different speed memory. At the very best it will slow the faster RAM down to the slower speed. At worst, they won't work together at all and you'll end up with an unstable or unbootable machine.

You didn't say what the motherboard is but it also controls the max memory size and speeds supported. Check the mobo first. If it doesn't support 1866 RAM, it's a waste of money. Just get the fastest RAM it will support.

If that turns out to be 1066, still get new RAM for the 8Gb. Don't try to add 4Gb to the existing 4Gb. It more than likely won't work with newer and older RAM. It might, but again you may end up with an unstable or unbootable machine. There's a reason that RAM is sold it "kits". The sticks have been tested with each other.

Gigabyte P67A-UD3-B3 is the motherboard it supports 1866

Yes I though worst case scenario it wont boot up
Yes I knew it would clock down if it worked
Ram is already bought came out of my old machines

so back to the start is 12gb 1033 vs 8gb 1866 would my brother see a difference?

It will be a better machine with the 12 GB, but mixing RAM rarely works.
You could try to mix, see if it works or not, then decide of you need to get a new kit, but your chances of not getting new RAM are slim.
Also, you wnt to get a k CPU I see, but to OC you need a good PSU and motherboard. Your mobo is good, but whats your PSU? Also, your money may be better spend on an upgrade in GPU, what does he have now?

ram works, it rebooted about 2-3 times and I thought I had a issue, then 4th-10th seemed to work lol as I wanted to see if it was stable even booted a few games

700 watt OCZ ModXStream Pro

Not going to Overclock, if he wants to he can melt it once it is in his hands lol
