Hi,
After having tried to fix a stability issue by doing changes in the bios my computer crashed. After some hours I finally maaged to start windows but the startup has become much slower. Before the changes it took the system about 1 minute to start now it´s rather 5 minutes. Also many programs run very slowly now and scans that would normally take half an hour now take 3-4 hours. The sound doesn´t work properly either and the CPU value is much higher than usual. I´ve done some quick scans for possible viruses but nothing was detected. Maybe I need to run a full scan but that would take a lot of time. I ran some fast scans with Iobit Malware Fighter and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I´m not totally sure what caused these problems if it now was a change to default in the bios settings or anything else.

It's probably all those anti-viruses, only use one. Also open the run command (windows key + R) and type in msconfig. when this appears go to startup tab and disable everything that isn't Microsoft. Run a Defrag on the drive as well. If you want good start times in the seconds rather than minutes I suggest getting an SSD.

You may also need to reinstall windows.

If none of the software based stuff is fixing the issue it may be hardware, also you didn't specify the changes you made in the BIOS this might be helpful to know.

Hi there Finn88,

It would be really nice to share with us, some of the BIOS changes you've made.
What about setting BIOS to defaults?

Apart from that, slow boot times could be associated with HDD related issues. This is why, it would be nice to back up the important data stored on your drive.
After that, you can run both short and extended DLG tests on your WD drive. The results should provide some information on the overall health status of the drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=7ib5N9

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Hi D_Know_WD,
Thanks for your reply and tips.
I may give your recommendations a try.
I do also believe that from what I´ve read on other forums I´m dealing with a HDD related issue.
I think I pressed first Fail Safe Default and then Optimized Default or the other way around. I don´t really remember but what *I do remember is that I experienced my current problems with the programs running slow after doing choosing one of the options and that choosing the other option didn´t make things better. After that I haven´t made any changessince then. When I looked into the Bios settings I realized that it was set to IDE and not AHCI. After that I set SATA mode back to AHCI while the other one is still in IDE. This made things only worse and I was for some long time not able to actually start windows. Would you recommend me to set both SATAS (the mode and the other one) to AHCI or would you rather recommend me to chose Fail Safe Default?

From what I´ve read here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2135234/solved-switched-bios-fail-safe-defaults-optomized-defaults-windows-wont-load.html

A switch from Fail Safe Default to Optimized Default may lead to a change from AHCI to IDE and in that way to a malfunctioning computer.

Looking forward to your reply

I´m really kind of desperate right now

Hi there,
I haven´t been able to fix my problems yet. I couldn´t find the things Megahertz described in his post.
Still, I´ve made pictures of my BIOS settings and attach them to this post. I hope that anyone of you can tell me what is wrong in the settings and how to change it. I also ran antivirus scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but this wasn´t of any help either.
I ran also sfc/scannow but this wasn´t able to fix problems. I have saved the details from the scan and attach them to this post. Mabe anyone of you is able to read it.

Best

So you have two drives? Well, I believe you can set both drives to AHCI. Once you do that, you can check the health status of both drives.
Also, I think that it would be easier if you take your secondary drive out, and use just your OS one for a while. That way, you will be able to narrow the cause. (whether it would be a BIOS setting, a failing drive, etc.)

I'm not sure if you can attach files to the posts.

D_Know_WD :)

Thanks for your reply D_Know_WD!
You can check out my attachments on the following sevenforums thread:http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/402850-windows-programs-run-very-slowly-please-help.html#post3299297

I haven´t received any new reply there. I think that if you can see the details for yourself this may help.

Thanks

Hi aford10!
Thank you for your reply.
My CPU is pretty unsteady and I would claim that it is now after the error for most of the time much higher than before. Now it can be as low as only 10% but often just when having a few normal programs running up to 100% which I think is if I´m not mistaken a lot. RAM is at 12% right now and my link speed is 100 Mb. I have both IObit Malware Fighter and Malwarebytes Anti-Malwarebytes. It didn´t really make a difference when I had only one of them running.

If you have malwarebytes free, that is an on demand scanner, not an active shield, and won't conflict with any other antivirus software.

When your CPU spikes to near 100%, check the processes that are using it, and see what the highest offenders are. Watch it and see if it changes or is consistently the same process.

I assume you're connected to a modem or router by ethernet cable? If so, what is the model of the device you're connected to?

Hi again aford10,
You´re right with your assumption about my internet.
My internet is by the way one of the only things that runs pretty much as well as usual.
The program of my current active programs that is the highest offender right now is the Advanced System Care program. I haven´t had such issues before. I´ve run the different tune up functions on ASC Pro but this wasn´t unfortunately to much avail.

What is the model of your router or modem? Most modern hardware should be giving you 1Gbps speed, not 100Mbps. This will make a big difference in more than just browsing the internet. With the model number, we can check to verify.

So is ASC running an active scan on your computer at the time? It must be performing some function to be using it up. If not, you might want to uninstall it to test the performance.

This is the model of my router: 192.168.1.1
Yeah, it was running actively but now I´ve stopped and the CPU has gone down, but when the CPU was at it´s peak almost 100% the highest offender was Firefox with about double as much CPU usage as ASC. From what I could see Firefox did also cause an enormous amount of integrity issues but it runs more stable than my other browser Opera.

Some basic disk maintenance might help.
Run disk cleanup
click start, type msconfig, click startup tab and disable unnecessary items
click start find command right click, click run as administrator
in the dos prompt type chkdsk /f c:
after that in dos prompt type sfc /scannow
A disk defragment if necessary would also help for hard drives only, never defrag ssd drives.

Hi,
I´ve now tried to fix my problem by using my Windows 7 install disc.
However the installation failed and I received the following error code: 0xC0000005
From what I´ve read elsewhere I could possibly solve this problem by formatting my volumes and merging them into one. My question is: Does formatting the volumes mean that I will lose all my files or will they remain untouched?

Looking forward to replies

Finn

I don´t fullt recolelct the changes I made in the BIOS settings but I think that I changed AHCI to IDE or the other way around. I don´t really recall what value I had before but I have IDE now and from what I´ve read I should considering my high performance pc hav esomething else than IDE. But when I changed to AHCI it didn´t work. For once I was able to play videos in better quality but then only crashes followed and I had to revert my changes to IDE to be able to boot to desktop.
I tried reinstalling Windows but it failed because of this error code: 0xC0000005
I´ve tried the other things you suggested but none of them worked.

Thanks for your very quick answer tekno2go!
So I take it the same goes for formatting a partition?
After formatting, am I able to restore my files with the help of a restore point I´ve created?
Do you think that merging both C and D without data loss as suggested here; https://www.partitionwizard.com/mergepartitions/how-to-merge-c-and-d-drive-windows-7.html
could solve my problem with error code: 0xC0000005 ?
This error appeared during my attempt to repair windows by using the Win 7 instalaltion disc.

It would really be great to know if there is a way to change from IDE to AHCI and still be able to boot to desktop for this is something I´m not able to after the change.

Best

Finn

If the hard drive that has your C: drive was installed in IDE mode, you can't change it to AHCI. You would have to format it, which yes, means you would lose your data unless you backed it up.

Ok, so that model you listed is a Thompson 10/100 router. That would explain the 100Mbps connection. What is the model of your modem that the router is attached to?
