I am planning to build a gaming system based on an AMD FX-8350 and a MSI 970 Gaming ATX motherboard. Heres the pcpartspicker list.
I currently plan to make my own case and will dip my hands into liquid cooling for the cpu.
I am stumped on what to get for the graphics card when I will be mainly play CSGO and dota but would like to be able to play AAA titles at a decent fps.
Cheers

Yes overclocking the AMD is not going to make up the difference and is expensive to do so. Go Intel all the way or wait for Zen to be released. Forget overclocking, grab an i5 6500 + B150 and then the most expensive video card you can afford.

Well since you're wanting to start with a lower mid range 2012 cpu I recommend you stick to lower mid range video cards. Something like a GTX1050ti would be good depending on what your budget is. Of course even the $110 i3 6100 would outperform the FX8350 in almost every game.

is the i3 just flat out better? I will be trying to overclock the cpu anyway so would it be better to get the i3?

an i3 6100 will be better most of the time, yes

at least an i5 6400 would be ideal

building an amd setup is not recommended, it's a dead end currently until maybe the release of zen
