I have a Toshiba laptop using windows 10 that has had some kind of failure, I want to get the data off the hard drive so I can save it to an external hard drive. I have an Acer laptop using windows 7, I tried plugging the Toshiba hard drive into the Acer USB with an adapter, but it wanted to format the drive, then I tried removing the Acer hard drive and putting the Toshiba drive in it's place, but it displayed this:

"media test failure, check cable"
"exiting broadcom PXE ROM"
"no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

Do I need to install windows 10 on the Acer with the Toshiba hard drive installed? I don't have windows 10 on discs, it was only preinstalled. Or can I do it with some other kind of boot disc?
Thanks

Hey there, Michael.

It's normal for you not to be able to boot to Windows with a different drive from another computer. The OS has been configured for the hardware of the other system. Other than that, if the drive has hardware issues it could make things even harder.
I'd recommend that you connect the drive again via the adapter (without reformatting it) and try accessing it via Ubuntu Live USB (this is basically a freeware, bootable, portable version of Linux), to see if it's properly recognized and accessible by that OS. Another option would be to give it a go with data recovery software: https://www.lifewire.com/free-data-recovery-software-tools-2622893.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Putting it in a useable state:
Get a hdd for cheap off ebay or something, intall what OS the license is underneath and if it insnt win 10, then im not sure but that will put your laptop in a useable state
