BIOS recognized SDD with windows, but get "select boot device" error message when loading windows.

So I have a crucial 256gb SSD with windows 7 on it. Both my SSD (in slot 0) and my HDD (slot 1) are recognized by my Gigabyte mobo. When I choose the SSD with windows though, I'll get the "no boot device detected, insert boot device and press any key" message.

I don't think its a faulty connection between the mobo and the drive, since the mobo always recognizes it and the SATA cables were changed out within the past year. I'm not sure what else it could be.

The weirdest part is that sometimes it will just startup normally and windows will load fine. The most recent time I only unplugged and replugged in the SATA cables - it still did not work. Then I walked away for 10 minutes and turned it on and it started up successfully. It seemingly does not matter what I do hardware-wise, so I'm confused. I don't think anything is overheating, the most recent time the computer was just sitting with spotify open but not playing when it went unresponsive and on startup the error message appeared.

I can give more precise information if needed as to what exact mobo and SSD if needed, but wasn't sure how much it would help here.

Hello again, @Ian_61!

I hope the swapping of the SATA cables works as a miscommunication could be causing these random 'Select Boot Device' errors. Anyhow, your Disk Management seems okay. In the meantime, you could also try to run SFC /scannow command at boot. It will scan the integrity of your system files and replace incorrect versions. Hopefully, it might also help with the boot error. Run the StartUp Repair as well and let me know how it goes.

Good luck!

Welcome to the TH Community, @Ian_61!

Did you unplug the HDD from the system when you were installing Windows 7 onto the SSD? It would be really helpful if you share a screenshot of your Disk management in Windows. I'm not sure if you have tried this, but it might be a good idea to swap the SATA cables again and see how the system will boot from the SSD. Another thing that could also help is running the Start Up Repair Options from your Windows installation media (recovery disk). If there's something wrong with the OS itself, it could easily fix the issue.

Make sure you backup all your important data somewhere off-site prior to tampering with the PC & storage. This is the surest way to avoid any potential data loss.

Keep me posted! :)

Hey SuperSoph_WD thanks for the quick response! I'll attach a picture of my disk management, everything looks normal to me. In the next few days I'll be getting a new SATA cable an see if I can have my mom find my Windows disk to try the recovery. If anything looks off to you in the disk management, let me know. Otherwise I'll post again once I switch out the cables and try the recovery.

Here's the image - C: is my SSD drive
