Hi all,

My question is simple. Is it better to have one 16GB ram stick that is fast 3000MHz CL15 or two sticks of 8GB that run slower at 2166MHz CL13 in DUAL CHANNEL?

So it's not just a question about single channel vs dual channel, the answer to that I know. It's rather about a fast ram in single channel vs slower ram in dual channel.

Thanks!

I would listen to him over me on this. Memory is his specialty.

I am 100% sure that you would not be able to tell the difference in real world uses though.

Would you say then, that investing in memory is not smart. Since there's not a noticable difference in real world uses, maybe one should always just get a basic DDR4, as cheap as possible?

Depends on what you do with the rig, some games (a growing trend like the faster DRAM better and show nice increases in performance (FPS)

Also see the benefit of faster DRAM particularly in multi-tasking, memory centric apps, and using large data sets

It really depends on your uses. Sometimes, it can make a difference. I should not have worded that so definitively. Using a cpu's integrated graphics is a great example of when faster memory makes a world of difference. Gaming with a good video card is a great example of when memory speed makes little difference in most cases. There are always exceptions like Fallout 4.

It also depends on your other parts. A lot of motherboards cannot utilize the faster RAM speeds at all. If you're building a new Intel Skylake build, only the Z170 boards can run memory faster than 2133mhz. I would always stick to dual channel kits as two separate single dimms are not guaranteed to work well together.
