Can you use a hard drive from a Proprietary desktop in a new build?

Right now I'm under the impression the hard drive from my Lenovo h50 is going to be incompatible with my gaming motherboard. When I boot up it turns off after 5 seconds.

I thought maybe I damaged the board, but everything works on the computer the hdd was built with. I see this as a possible failure on the hard drive to detect the BIOS it was configured to boot up. I'm just trying to save a couple extra dollars, seeing that I have a surplus of hard drives from old Dells and HPs.

Windows most likely won't be reusable according to their terms of service.

The bios does the work(detecting),not the hdd.Go unto bios and change boot order to that hdd.The windows install will be invalidated by that but you can easily call windows to reactivate(need activation number on hand)
