Hello All,

I am a Uverse Customer and my 2Wire Router is located in my office. I am planning to run a wired Ethernet cable between my office and our living room so I can connect my Smart TV and Access Point to the 2Wire Router. I am considering the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 as it can be set up to extend the range of my WiFi or it can be set up as an Access Point.

Based on what I have read, setting up the Netgear as an access point will provide full duplex communication vs as an extended where I would only get half duplex communication. The Netgear has LAN Ports so would it make sense to connect my TV to one of the LAN ports on the Netgear? The alternative would be to buy a switch and to connect the Netgear and the TV to separate ports on the switch. Buying a switch would mean less load on the Netgear processor so that is the only advantage as far as I can see.

Just looking for feedback\suggestions\corrections on my thinking. Tom's Hardware chose the AC1900 as best in class which is why I am considering it.

Thanks, Bill

The Netgear is a good choice. Asus AC68U is a good choice. A router that has an easy configuration as an access point and good performance. An access point is always preferable than a WIFI repeater. You can use the LAN ports on the Netgear to connect three other devices.

I don't recommend getting anything "faster" than an AC1900 router. Beyond that designation it is all hype...

I was reviewing the documentation for setting up the Netgear as an Access Point and it says that once the Netgear is set up as in Access Point mode, the only way a device can connect to the Netgear is via wireless. I guess the LAN ports are disabled? I have submitted a question to Netgear. If Netgear confirms my understand, should I buy and install a switch so I can connect the Netgear and my TV to a wired network?

When you said Netgear AC1900, I assumed R7000 not EX7000. Let me look at the documentation ...
OK in the user's manual -- http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/EX7000/EX7000_UM_21dec2014.pdf There is a section starting on PDF page 18 for using the EX7000 as an access point. I think the statement about "connecting" to the device is only for management. I think you have to connect wirelessly for management once in access point mode. I bet the other 4 ethernet ports still work but don't have access to the management functions.
