Need help with a possible pagefile size/use issue...

I’m having trouble with the size of the pagefile.sys file that Windows is managing. I have read a few things about Windows 8 having pagefile issues. I’m not sure if that’s what I have.

One of my systems has an i5 4460 processor with 8g Ram running Window 8.1. The only thing this system does is run some monitoring software. In Task Manager my CPU runs at about 12-20%. My memory use is a flat 40% all of the time – it NEVER changes. The monitoring software does generate a fair amount of disk activity – fluctuates between 40%-60% most of the time EXCEPT when the pagefile suddenly kicks in (with NO change in memory use), at which time it goes to 100% use for 15-20 minutes before coming back down. During this time the monitoring software slows down significantly.

Any thoughts on how I solve this problem? I am hoping I could do something like disable the pagefile or maybe move it to a USB drive. I wanted to try to not to avoid buying more memory because I was planning on going to a new machine in about a year, but if that’s what’s REALLY needed…

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your help!

First, I think I mispoke in my original post. What I meant by “when the pagefile kicks in” is the number of bytes/second read and written to the page file increases dramatically – from about 50,000 to 3,000,000 and higher and causes the disk activity to max at 100% for a period of time (20-60 minutes) before settling back again and that disk activity significantly slows down the main app I have running.

To answwer your questions: I currently have the system set to automatically manage the paging file. It has the “Currently allocated” set at 1280 MB. It says the minumum allowed is 16 MB with the recommended as 4595 MB. Interesting that “Recommended” does not equal “Currently Allocated” since the sytem is supposedly managing it.

I have a 1 TB hard drive with only 40 GB used – PLENTY of space.

Do you still think I should turn off automatic management of the pagefile and set it to 8000 – 12000 MB? I won’t be able to try this until tomorrow morning.

See my responses to your questions in the thread.

I did change my pagefile to 8GB from the having the system set to automatically manage the paging file. It had the “Currently allocated” set at 1280 MB. It had said the minimum allowed is 16 MB with the recommended as 4595 MB. Setting it to 8 GB seemed to solve the problem. On Black Friday I found a sale for memory so I'm going to upgrade my RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB. Should I change the pagefile setting again after I upgrade? If so, what should the new setting be? Would increasing it to an even larger size take some strain off my disk drive (pre-upgrade its averages about 75% Active Time)?
