I own a mac laptop air and had various images saved on my desktop. Later I decided to transfer them all onto my USB drive which I have now lost. Can I recover the original files from my laptop? They all have great sentimental value and I am worried they will be lost forever.

There's lots of data recovery apps out there you could look up via a Google search. Failing those, you'd have to send the drive to a company that specializes in data recovery, but that can get extremely expensive.

The more you use the laptop the more chance the images will get over written
Ideally you should switch the laptop off.
Then talk to an expert in data recovery
In windows laptops it is usually possible to boot off a linux or windows pe cd or usb
Or remove the hard disk and attach to another pc
With Mac things are more difficult especially the very thin air models
Programs like photorecovery from cgsecurity.org can work on ntfs (windows), ext (linux ) or mac os hard disks.
They scan the hard disk looking for the header information in picture files , office files etc
Then list the files and recover to another disk
The file name is usually lost so you may have to view the image (picture) to find the one you want
