Okay, it's upgrade season. I've been on 8gb's of RAM for quite a while now, and i'm looking for 16gb now. I have a Gigabyte 970A-D3P and i'll probably just get all new ram entirely. But i'm not sure if i should shoot for 4x4gb or 2x8gb. I know 4x4gb is better, but because it is dual channel and all around a little worse of a mobo, give me some options and some insight. Thank You

I am aware what dual channel means. Generally 4 slots supports quad channel, I assumed dual channel only meant 2 slots.
I would not usually advise buying sticks later on, you risk incompatibility and restrict yourself to the current memory standard. You will most likely not need more than 16GB, and will probably not notice the benefits from quad channel, so I would still advise 2x8GB

The mobo is quoted with having "Dual channel memory architecture" but does include 4 available slots

If it doesn't say supports quad channel anywhere then it may not. Check the motherboard website specifications

That's where i'm looking at it.
4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory (Note 1)
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules (Note 2)
Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules

In that case I do not think it supports quad channel, and you would be better getting dual and saving the money

Dual Channel does not mean only 2 ram slots and quad channel does not mean 4 ram slots. Dual channel means that the ram sticks work in groups of 2's. I would still prefer 2 x 8 GB sticks as you are fully utilizing your dual channel and you still have room for future upgradability.
