Hi all,

So currently I have 1 8gb stick of RAM and am looking to add more. Would it be more beneficial to get another 1 8gb stick to run in duel channel mode, or to get another 2 8gb sticks (24gb total). I'm assuming more RAM = better, but just wanted to get other peoples opinions.

I would get 3 sticks but my cpu cooler blocks 1 of the RAM slots :(

computer specs

MOBO: MSI Gaming Z97 GAMING 5 LGA 1150 Intel Z97
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

1st off it is always best to follow the board's recommendations. You are running in single channel mode which means half speed for that stick. 1 more stick will conform to the board's needs and may result in a performance increase.

Secondly more is not...

Getting the (1) 8GB stick and running in Dual Channel mode would be my choice. Very unlikely you would use all 16GB let alone 24GB. If you stick in another stick and your motherboard doesn't support flex mode for RAM you will run all 3 in single channel which would be worse than lesser RAM in dual channel.

Secondly more is not necessarily better. If you are already meeting/exceeding all of your software's recommendations you most likely won't realize a performance increase. There are instances where additional and better RAM(I am thinking of a gaming situation on youtube where additional and faster DDR4 RAM would have resulted in a slight performance increase but the location is one I've forgotten. Yes, The video RAM is very important but the system RAM plays a roll in allowing a seamless transfer of information.

Can't you slide the CPU fan attached to the cooler to allow up to 4 modules? The 212 Evo does allow that modification. You can add an additional fan on the other side of the cooler to offer additional cooling performance.
