Basically I'm have issues finding a CPU for the ASRock Fatality X99 Prof. i7. I was originally gonna go with the 6800k, but later found out that the 6700k was better but now I'm not even sure. I just want to know what the most practical CPU is for this MB. All I want to do is play games like crysis, Disonored, Tomb Raider, and other games like that...help me please lol.

Solution

Anything past the i7-6700k in either the Z170 or X99 chipset wouldn't be a big upgrade anyways. The i7-6700k is top-tier today and does everything you can expect from an 8-threaded CPU excellenty. Can't ask for more and It's best to not look 5 years into the future, but look at today.
the 6700k is not compatible with the X99 boards. it needs a Z170 board since it's using the LGA1151 and not the LGA2011-3 (which the x99 is)

for gaming the 6700k > 6800k
if you already bought the board, I suggest pairing it with a 6850k if you got the cash
if you haven't bought the board yet, I suggest getting a 6700k + a Gigabyte z170 Gaming3/GamingK3/UD3 or Asus Pro Gaming

I have not bought the MB yet, and I just want CPU that will last me for a good while. I currently have an AMD Phenom IIx4 925, and its just now starting to not be supported. I forgot to mention, I'm also not opposed to switching to AMD if it truly is a better choice for the games that I would like to play.

if he already got the x99 board it's actually more efficient to stick with a 6800/6850k
also the performance difference will get smaller between these with dx12 which profits off 6 physical cores

It sounds like you have the money to burn on a 6800k and X99 motherboard, to I'd advise going for a 6700k and Z170 motherboard, or an i5-6600k and putting the extra ~£100 into a better GPU (if you haven't already picked out a GTX 1080)

The only issue i see with getting the Z170, is that the i7-6700k is the highest CPU I can put into it, which makes me worry about upgrading later. Am I going to have to do the same thing I'm doing now and buy a new MB so I can upgrade my CPU

If you're only thinking of gaming, don't worry about X99. The single core performance is not as good as the 6700k, and is mostly used for high end photo or video editing, or 3D modelling. You will need be needing to replace a 6700k for a long time.

cpus arent advancing very fast the 6700k should last a long while

a 5 year old 2600k especially if overclocked is still a great cpu now

Would I need to upgrade my RAM as well, I'm currently running 8Gb of DDR3. I don't want to have to upgrade my GPU just yet if it's not necessary, but I'm runnin with a single AMD R9 380

Z170 does require DDR4.

I'm looking for reasonable ''overkill''. Other than that would you say that the components are all fine and dandy working with eachother ?

I'm looking at about $200 USD for each component as a base line. I've been looking into building a new rig for awhile, but with Black Friday and everything I'm trying to get the ball rolling a little faster than usual. I don't plan on having all the pieces delivered to my house on the same day

As long as a 600w PSU is sufficient, thats about it

600w should be fine as long as its a half decent psu--- psu quality is as important as wattage

not in the usa so will let some one else help you with the actual parts as over there is usually around 30--40% cheaper than here so what you can get for your

money will be better than here in the uk
