Hi all. I've just bought an XFX RX 480 8GB graphics card a couple of days ago. Big upgrade from my old 280x.

I can play most other demanding games on maximum settings like witcher 3 ect no problem but Warhammer total war refuses to run at a decent framerate.

I tried out total war Warhammer on DX12 which I should have absolutely no problem playing with ultra settings. Just started the game and on the first introductory mission (Vampire Counts siege battle) my fps would drop to 15-20. Also tested in custom battles. Same results when lots of units are present. it really struggles when alot of units are on screen and the fps and gpu and cpu usage seem to be allover the place, ive had this problem for multiple total war titles despite upgrading hardware over the years.

the fps doesnt seem to improve even if i turn settings down from the recommended settings of ultra to medium its still the same fps.

Here are my specs:
GPU:XFX RX 480 Gaming X 8GB
CPU: Intel Core i5 4690k 3.8 Ghz
PSU : Antec Earthwatts 750 platinum
HDD: Not sure of the name but its an old one from my old pc
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 1844 mhz

I really have no idea what could be causing these problems.

Since you said "lots of units" that means almost certainly that it's a CPU bottleneck. Such as:

Those are older, and of course there may be some other issue but if the AVERAGE FPS looks about right for your resolution and settings, and then you get sudden drops with large amounts of units that's a a CPU issue, especially considering changing graphics settings doesn't help.

If true, then other than waiting for the game to be better optimized there's probably not much you can do.

I don't have the game so it's hard to comment better.
