Help in backing up data on SD card before I format it

I am running out of space on my android. It's prompting me to backup my data before I format my SD card. Can you help me as I am very new to smartphones?

Hey there, Charlie64.

You have plenty of backup applications to choose from, for example you could check out this article: http://www.tomsguide.com/us/pictures-story/633-best-android-backup-apps.html. Other than that you can use your gmail account for the backups (settings -> backup & reset). Most phone manufacturers also feature a tool which could help you backup your stuff (however in most cases your backup goes to a computer instead of the SD card).

WARNING: THE BACKUP IN BACKUP AND RESET DOES NOT BACKUP EVERYTHING.
Look I've learned this the hard way and I don't want anyone else to have to go through this.
