Polaris was designed for low end cards and it has smaller die sizes. Does that suggest that nvidia is making less money per card sale on the 1060 then say a 480?

Solution

The die size for the 1060 is smaller than the 480..

So probably not, no.

RX480 die size:
232mm2

GTX 1060 die size:
200mm2

Nvidia also uses different GPU dies. GP 104 is larger for the 1080 and 1070, GP 106 is smaller for the 1060, GP 107 is smaller still for the 1050 and 1050 ti etc.
