hello. i just bought a toshiba external hard drive (500gb) and it was working fine at first, i transferred all important files from my old laptop and is able to watch movies that i store in it when i connect to a TV, but recently when i connect it to my laptop i cannot see the folders but when i click "This PC" it's storage details can be shown. the only stuff visible that's in the external hard drive are "$RECYCLEBIN" and "Drive", i though the files were hidden so i tried this in cmd:
e:
attrib -s -h /s /d *.*
but it will just say access denied -D:\$RECYCLEBIN blah blah
please, please help me! im using windows 10 by the way

Hi there graced97,

That is really unpleasant. :(

I believe that it would be a nice start to just see how is the drive going to be recognized under another OS. You can boot ( Ubuntu from a CD or a flash drive). Here's a thread on the Ubuntu Live CD approach: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
If the drive is recognized under Ubuntu, you can back up the data stored on it and reformat it afterwards. Then, you can see if it is in a healthy state: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Let me know how this goes,
