Motherboard: MSI Z97 GAMING 5
GPU: Radeon 7800 Series

Thinking about upgrading my GPU to this or this

Or

I play games like Overwatch, Minecraft and record. Is this worth the upgrade? What's the difference between the two GPU's?

By "this" you mean GTX 1060? It's likely because at the time it was manufactured the materials and tech to make it were available for cheaper than at the time the 970 came out. The GTX 1060 performs better than a 970 actually iirc (more like a GTX 980). So 970's a bit of a waste to pay full price for.

Your links take me to .CA (as I'm in Canada), so I'm assuming you're looking at GPUs in the ~$400 range?

For those titles, it's not necessary. A gTX 1060 6GB can be had for ~$225 to $240

https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GeForce-1060-WINDFORCE-GV-N1060WF2OC-6GD/dp/B01JNUO6BG/ref=sr_1_29?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1480004325&sr=1-29&keywords=gtx+1060+6GB

3GB versions for even less.

And will perform very similar, if not better to a GTX 970

Why is the 970 so much more expensive?

I plan to record most of these games as well.

It's older, and I don't think it's being produced in the same volumes (or at all) any longer. So 'new, old stock', new in packaging will always command a higher premium. Besides, it's still 'new' enough to be priced against it's MSRP (which was higher than the newer cards).

A 6GB 1060 gives you the most raw performance, and should be more than capable for your needs. A 3GB variant would likely do it too.

The GTX 970 is last generation "Maxwell"
During that time it was the 4th best video card available I believe, and considered the mainstream video card. It was around $400 at the time.

If I had to guess, stores aren't gonna drop their prices because they probably payed a lot to buy the card and resell it ; not sure how the store itself works that's just a guess.

NVIDIA has a cool feature called Shadowplay in GeForce Experience which allows you to record gameplay with little performance taxing on hardware.

Was looking around and this seemed to be a lot cheaper and I've seen a lot of people upgrade from the 970 to this. Is it cheaper just because of the fac that it's new?
