Surround Sound and headsets, need clarification

HI,

If I use a headset, does the surround sound come from the internal sound card or does all the surround sound processing happen in software?

I suspect if I connect my "Surround Sound" headset to my 3.5mm jack directly I would only be getting stereo.

Can someone help me understand?

The surround sound typically comes through an in-line amplifier which then connects via 3.5mm jack.
You can use it without the amp of course, but the amp allows your headphones to take full effect to put it simply.
It will just be a bit duller without the amplifier, but perfectly fine.
