CPU Overheating While Idle

I was in the middle of playing Skyrim, solid 60FPS without any drops then all of a sudden I was getting 10-30 and my CPU fan was spinning like crazy. I downloaded a program which detects my CPU temperatures and while idle, I was getting 100 degrees. I have removed my processor, let it cool down, re-applied thermal paste but now I'm getting 60 degrees idle, it's better but it's not good.

I have not changed or upgraded anything in my computer for a long while now, I'm using an i7-4770 cooled by a Maelstrom 120T. The cooler can not cool the processor down no matter how fast the fan spins. I don't know what to do, please help me.

Do you still have the Intel CPU cooler that came with your CPU? You could use that one and see how it performs. If you get better results with that cooler then your current one maybe somehow got damaged. You should also check your CPU vcore/vid level and make sure that your motherboard isn't overvolting your CPU. You could also try resetting the CMOS/BIOS or restoring the BIOS default options. That way if a BIOS voltage setting somehow got altered it will get restored to its default status.

I did what you said and it seems to be good now, stable 30 degrees. It must of been the Maelstrom 120T, are they known to fail? I noticed it was blowing out cold air even though the processor was hot, maybe the water stopped circling. Anyway, thanks so much for your help. I can now play Skyrim without lagging now.

Glad I could help. The pump of your water cooler is probably dead so the water cannot circulate through the loop. That's why you see cold air coming from the radiator, the hot water just stays above the CPU and it doesn't reach the radiator. You should know that the water pump is the heart of every water cooling system but it is also the weakest link and the most probable cause of malfunction. You should always keep an eye on it and make sure that it always works or else you risk hardware damage to the rest of your system.
