My external hdd fell down to the ground and now when I plug it in, the computer doesn't recognize it but the light goes on. Also the hard drive makes high pitch beeping noise.
I tried different cables and different computers but no luck.
Any advice? is it dead? is it possible to recover the data?
thanks

There is a small but non-zero possibility of just the external enclosure or connection being broken.

Take it apart and get the drive out. Expose the SATA connections, and connect it to a desktop internally.
This might work.

If it can't be read by Windows at all, then software solutions aren't going to do much for you. So the primary option would be to send it to a data recovery firm, but be forewarned that this can go into four figures very easily. There's also the last resort-y option, the going-to-trash-the-hard-drive-anyway plan of putting in the freezer and hope it's a very specific problem that freezing it temporarily fixes enough for you to get important things off of it.

The unfortunate truth of the matter is that the only time you can protect your data is *before* you lose it. A backup plan for your important data is just as important as changing the oil in your car or the air filter in your furnace.

Thanks,
I agree on the last part, and I had actually had a second hard drive prepared to transfer the data, just happened a few days too early...

My condolences on the double bad luck! I'm hoping in the next 10 years, the decline of physical hard drives makes this a question we have to answer a lot less frequently.
