Is OC worth it?

I have never overclocked before and I don't know a single thing about it. I am building a new PC soon and wanting to know if I should get the i5 6600k so I can OC, but I've always been skeptical thinking I'll mess up my CPU or GPU by blowing it up or something. :/

Tips?

It depends on your budget and uses. If you're gaming on a budget, overclocking is almost never worth it. Overclocking is expensive. Let's compare. You need 3 things to be able to overclock.

1. K model cpu
2. After market cpu cooler
3. Z motherboard

Overclocking setup

So you save $87 immediately by not overclocking. That $87 would be much better spent on the video card if you're on a budget. Or it would buy you a good 250GB ssd.

And most importantly, overclocking just doesn't make much difference these days.

Yeah I am kind of on a $1000 budget for a good gaming PC and I think it would be the best to follow my gut and not OC and just go for the better hardware.

For $1000, assuming only parts and no peripherals, I would make sure I fit in a 1070, ssd, and THEN consider overclocking only if you have left in the budget. It really depends on the monitor though. A GTX1070 may be an unnecessary waste of money.
