First of all:
ASUS RT-AC68U
Merlin firmware 380.63_2

I recently upgraded my internet connection from 50/5 to 100/10. However, I only saw 59Mpbs down, which was the same as when I had the 50 meg service.

I tested at the modem, and got 120Mbps down easily, so I reset my router to stock. (Like an idiot, I remembered that I had QoS enabled and was set to 59Mbps.

So anyway, after getting it configured as close as possible to how it was before, I tested my speeds at the modem, direct wired, and wireless. Numerous times.

At the modem, I get 120Mbps as before. Wired to the router, I get about 107Mbps, which isn't ideal but I figure in some overhead.

With wireless, it is quite inconsistent. Originally after the reset (before configuring) it used to slooowly accelerate to 100Mbps, and then drop down to about 50. Now it will sometimes struggle to get 7Mbps, other times I get 60 or 70 and it will stay there. I think I got 90 once. But for only a few seconds. Heck, sometimes it will swing from 100 to 5.

For comparison, it used to peg and lock at 59Mbps on my previous connection.

It's kind of a nightmare to troubleshoot because there are a ton of settings that can affect this, especially with the Merlin firmware. So if you have any questions to my settings let me know. But I'll give you what I've got off the top of my head.

- Jumbo Packets disabled
- 5Ghz power set to full (I live in an apartment)
- Channels: Auto
- multicast rate: Auto
- Bandwidth 20/40/80 (It seemed like anything else just sucked, but I can test again)
- Beam Forming On. Airtime Fairness On.
- QoS enabled (set to 110/10 based on that 107 down I was getting.)

The modem showed

OK, so I found the DSLReports speed test, and it showed an ungodly amount of bufferbloat. I changed things around, and dropped my QoS speed to something like 100/9, and it seems to have done the trick for the most part.

I also set up my streaming raspberry pi 3 as a DNS server and hope to verify some improvements there.
