Can I use 70% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning CPU and cooler?

Hi.

I have a question: I just bought a used CPU off eBay, and the seller said it may have thermal paste residue on it; is it safe to use 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol to clean the CPU, and a used cooler? Thanks.

Absolutely, that is one of the most common solvents to use for cleaning off thermal paste.

Be sure to also use a lint-free cloth and you'll be set.

It will evaporate slower than 90+ percent isopropyl. Wait longer (a min. should be fine) between cleaning and applying new thermal compound.
