Greetings all,

I've had my GT 550ti 1GB since 2011, when I bought it for £100. To this very day it can capably play the likes of Crysis 3 on medium, and even gets around 40 hours out of Fallout 4 before the lag becomes ubearable in the city. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I just get the urge to play atmospheric RPG's from time to time.

At this point it would be wise to list my specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 - 3.2 GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
21inch 1920x1080 monitor

I've been comparing various 2GB cards in the £100 range, and many of them seem to be just the same, if not worse than my current card. This is puzzling to me, since I'm not tech-literate, and I'm wondering what the deal is with this 550ti. Why does its specs still hold up so well, six years later? As you can see, I don't even have very much RAM.

Anyway, besides my general curiosity about the 550ti, I'm wondering what my upgrade options look like. I've been toying with the idea of finding another 550ti and doing an SLI, but I can't find one for cheaper than about £300.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

For your budget, I would look into an AMD RX 460. You should be able to get one for about £100. If you would prefer to stay with Nvidia, you might be able to find some close out GTX 950s that fit your budget. Either should have about 3x the performance of your 550ti.

When shopping for a GPU, the model is much more important than the amount of RAM. Unless you are comparing between two otherwise identical cards, you really shouldn't even consider the RAM. Look for a current card. I recommend reading the Tom's article on best GPUs for the money to help you compare.

You may also find that you are somewhat limited by your CPU. It will struggle in games where there is a lot of action. It may be more to blame for your slowdowns in Fallout 4. If you drop your resolution and graphics settings as low as possible and still experience the slowdown, it's probably due to your CPU.
