I recently got a 1070 and was wondering if it would be a good idea to OC my CPU to about 4.4-4.6 ghz to help improve performance on higher graphics. I've already lost one pc to a stupid decision with little research and verification, so I'm wondering if there is anything you guys would recommend I change or that needs to be changed before I OC, or if there is an alternative to it.

Specs:
GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 FTW acx 3.0
CPU: intel i7-4790k 4.0 ghz (I do not know the name of the heatsink/cooler. I believe it's just a stock, intel heatsink.)
PSU: Cougar SL 600W
MOBO: intel Z97
Memory: 16gb (2x8gb) DDR3 1866
Monitor: 16:9 1920x1080 144hz (may upgrade to a 4k when I have the money to do so.)

Thank you guys in advance.

Solution
Need a better heatsink, take a look at the 212 EVO or Cryorig H7, both about $30 and good on your CPU up to about 4.5 or so. Then simply raise the multiplier 1 at a time, if it doesn't boot, time to add a touch of voltage to the CPU, take it up about + 0.10 and see how far that will take you ;)

Frankly, you're not going to see much improvement from overclocking. The stock 1-core turbo is 4.4ghz, and 4-core is 4.2ghz. Bringing the whole CPU up to ~4.5ghz would be a 2-7% improvement, which would equate to a 0-4fps increase in games, best-case.
