In my computer right now I have an FX-6300, 16gb of hyperX Fury ram, an R9 380 (Asus strix) and aftermarket watercooler and such.
Now what im thinking is buying a i5-6600k and a new MOBO and Ram, and sticking with the r9 380....is this a good idea?

Solution
Most definitely, the performance increase you will see from the i5 paired with the DDR4 will be much higher than you would get from swapping out your 380. Alternatively you could hold out until the Kaby Lake i5 7600k is released in Q1 2017 and upgrade to that (depending on budget and how eager you are to upgrade).

I agree, an i5 will be a much better upgrade than anything you could do within that obsolete FX platform. I would go with the i5-6600k, a mid-range Z170 mobo, and 16gb of DDR4 while using your current R9 380. Oh in case you don't have one, get an SSD to install your operating system on while you are at it.

Ok so I do have an 240gb SSD but I got it after I had a hard drive and I have no clue how to put my operating system on it.
