Simple question, is the Zotac GeForce GTX 970 4GB still worth buying?

I looked up and saw it was released in mid 2014, is it becoming outdated?

I need a card in that price range and my friend has the same card.

Should I still get it (asking it for xmas) and how long will it be able to be run newer graphics intensive games?

Thanks

It was a very good card that could compete with the GTX 1060 in some games when overclocked well. The only reason to buy a 970 now is if it was cheaper than the 1060 3GB. It's difficult to say though. There are some things the 970 can do better than the 1060 3GB, and vice versa. I would be willing to say the 1060 would be better overall and last longer in performance though.

GTX 970 is outdated, and nVidia is notorious for not providing driver optimisations for old hardware (they do it so the new cards look better in benchmarks for the new games and make you feel an upgrade is worthwhile). Unless you can get one dirt cheap, I would steer clear.

Not really, unless you get an amazing price on it. Both the GTX 1060 (either 3 GB or 6 GB) and RX 480 are preferable, so you'd have to find a 970 at a significantly less expensive price to make it worthwhile. Unless we're talking a find in the $140 range, I wouldn't bother - Amazon has an ASUS 1060 3GB at $170 after rebate, after all.
