Hello,

I have an HP desktop with windows 10.

I would like to move the windows 10 to a new build. I plan to take the GPU from the hp to my new build as well. I have never done this before so any help would be appreciated!

Solution

1. You currently have 1 PC, 1 license. The HP. You are going to end up with 2 PC's, 1 license.
That does not work.

2. That OS will almost certainly need a clean install in your brand new PC

3. The license that came with the HP is not transferrable.

Your new PC needs a valid OS.
The HP will sell much faster with a valid OS that it came with.
Problem solved.

The best way is to sell the current system, and use those funds to buy a valid OS and HDD/SSD for your new PC.
Wipe the drive, reinstall the OS, sell it.

However..."moving windows from an hp to a new build" involves a lot of moving parts.

Are you thinking of just taking the drive out an dropping it into the new PC and all is well with the world?
Maybe, maybe not.

What are the specs of the old system and new system?
Are you trying to avoid the inevitable (and recommended) full wipe and reinstall?
Where did this Win 10 come from? Preinstalled, or an OS that you purchased and installed? Or an upgrade from something else?

I actually bought this HP with a future plan to reuse the GPU and the CPU in my next build.

CPU; i7 4790k (i know its a generation older than the newest but it is enough for me)
GPU: 980 ti

I wrote in my OP that I was planning on moving the GPU to the new build but I am actually planning on moving the CPU as well.

After I move the GPU and CPU from HP to the new build, I plan to put in cheaper parts on the HP and sell it.

If you are going to eventually sell the HP, then my recommendation is to NOT worry about the OS that currently lives on the HP.
Buy a new, valid OS for your new PC.
Recoup the funds when you sell the HP. And you will sell that HP much faster, for more money, if it has a valid, legal OS that actually came with it.

Much, much easier, safer, and better than trying to salvage the license and the OS from that into your whole new PC.

As said in the first comment there:
"if its too cheap its dodgy "

The second comment:
"They might work, but they're illegally reselling keys and you might get your key revoked by Microsoft. "

and on and on...
No, they are not 'valid'.

A Windows OS costs what it costs. Todays prices, around $85-$110.
Buy it from a valid retailer. Amazon/Newegg/Microsoft/Microcenter.

You better stay away from those. You can't get windows for 27 to 30 dollars anywhere. Not valid licenses any way. Unless you have the retail version it will not transfer. If you have the retail version it will transfer. It works just like before no difference. There seems to be confusion on how the activation works on windows 10 on the net. You will read all kinds of things out there but i got it straight from Microsoft that it still works the same as it always has.
