My FIL does not do crazy tasks, he watches a ton of youtube videos, follows live stocks, searches the web and occasionally watch online streams. My MIL asked me this morning to build him something and I came up with this, there was not budget but I didn't want to go too crazy nor did I want to make it too cheap. I figured I'd go with a system that can last for 3-5 years and be upgradeable, I am looking for you take on the build and if you have any idea on what to change.

Thanks

P.S Video card is my old card, and he will be getting a 2TB HDD from me and my wife amongst other things.

I was expecting a 6700K. Being a trader you could use a lot of CPU power. Still the 6500 is a pretty good chip. Then I run into the Z170 board. There is a non-k chip and a board that can support it. A tad confusing there. Good memory. Nice SSD. No storage drive? THEN I SEE THE UPDATE!!! Sorry!!!!!!HE doesn't watch movies or store anything of any signigance on his PC? 256GB is pretty small. 970? We are going back in time with Cher. Now. Skylake for the CPU but haswell for the GPU. I'd go for the 1060 6GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125879 . But FREE is so much better than that. Okay case with 1 front and one rear fan.

Then we see a diamond in the rough. Nice PSU.

I don't see an operating system.

I don't see a DVD player. Going completely digital?

Operating system will also come from me, I have Windows 10 on only 1 system and I can have up to 5 users with my account. USB Stick, and yes I never update drivers through cd or dvds anyways. So all will be updated using digital software directly from the companies websites.

Believe me, the first thing I looked at was a 1060 but then remember hell, I have a 970 laying around. Why spend close to 300 or over 300 when I can give it to him for free.

He has a 250gb SSD and I will add in a 2TB HDD. He truly does not store as much as you think he would.

I really thought and at first had the 6600k with an air cooler on my list because I was going to OC it for him, but it this is cheaper still, only by around 50 bucks though. I may still change my mind.

The key to desktop performance is the ssd.
Just be certain it is large enough.

Then, with a GTX970 why not plan on using a larger 4k monitors.
The desktop space from a 40" 4k monitor like a Philips BDN 4065UC is wonderful.
You can size and rearrange many small charts with no borders interfering.
You will want a DP connection for 60hz.

And... with many apps open, perhaps 32 gb would be better.

He is extremely limited on Desk space, he has all sorts of clutter on his desk. And it's set up for him to watch News and Business shows directly from the TV that is mounted on the wall 20ft infront of him.

32gb is total overkill, he does have quite a lot of tabs open. But not nearly enough to sweat 16gigs.

But I may go and look into a little bigger monitor with 4k res, Thanks Geofelt
