I did the free Win 10 upgrade, worked great, but recently found my HDD is going bad. Computer is about 5 years old, still worth saving, in good shape otherwise. How do I get Win 10 back again? Since the laptop came with Win 7, then I upgraded, I am not sure how to do this? Thanks for any help

PS I have the part (HDD) on the way already, and I can put it in, but after that's done, I am not sure if I have to pay for a new product Key, I have the original for the Win 7. No recovery media. I was given some hard instructions on downloading a Tool that downloads ISO??

Solution
Keep your win 7 product key available. But you probably won't need it, since you already activated win 10.

You need to carefully follow the directions on the MS site. On another computer:
1. Download the media creation tool on this other computer (not on to the flash drive). Right button click on it and run as administrator.
2. Follow the instructions on the site. You'll need win 10 home 64 bit. Plug in your flash drive when it tells you to do so. When it's finished you'll have win 10 installation on your flash drive.
3. Put your new hard drive in your laptop.
4. Plug in the flash drive with your laptop off.
5. Now power up and follow the instructions to install win 10.

If you did the win 10 upgrade and it activated, you're good to go. Windows 10 will be tied to your Microsoft account. When you reinstall win 10, it will ask you for your microsoft account credentials and win 10 will reactivate, since you didn't change the motherboard and CPU. Here's the win 10 download site - just follow the instructions for the USB flash: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10.

Hi Scott, I didn't get an alert on your reply so glad I stopped in. So you are saying I don't have to pay for the download for Win 10? And I don't have to first upload Win 7 back onto the new HDD? I think I am understanding you, but pretty new at this;) Also, forgot to mention I have a 32 GB Flash drive so I can use that right, to use that as the Recovery Media;)??

Sorry Scott, one more thing. I want to use the 2nd method down right;) I'm sure that's what you are saying;) But I'll see if you get this or not, thanks so much.

1. Correct - use your 32GB flash drive and the 2nd method - Using the tool to create....
2. Your win 10 upgrade is tied to your laptop hardware. Microsoft knows that harddrives fail. So, yes, you can download win 10, install it on your laptop with the new harddrive and win 10 should activate. You have a legitimate copy of win 10 - you don't have to buy another license.
3. No need to reinstall win 7 first. Just do a reinstall of win 10.

Ok, now that I totally understand this, I have one more question for you Scott. I have the Product Key that was for the Windows 7 Home Prem. That key will work with the Windows 10 I'm assuming because MS knows that I upgraded.

Update: I downloaded the tool Scott, and now I have an .exe file on my flash. Do I do the "install" of the mediacreationtool on the flashdrive? Or do I wait until I get my HDD in the Toshiba, and upload the .exe file? It's only using 17. some mb's so I must install it on the flash?? I'll hope to hear from you. Sorry if this is a totally stupid question.
