Does the stock Intel cooler need a side vent on the case?

Well, the title is pretty self-explanatory. I just realized that the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo I ordered is 9mm too large, and probably won't fit in my case, so I'll be stuck with the i3 6100's stock cooler. The stock cooler blows air towards the side of the case (I think), and the case that I will be using does not have a side vent for it. Do I really need a side vent?

Oh. Well what do I know?
Thanks!

There was a time when it was recommended to use a case with a side panel fan for intel cpu's in the days of the p4, pentium d and first core 2 duo cpu's but that was a number of years ago. Cases have evolved over the years and the cases prior to the 'tac' (thermally advantaged chassis design per intel) weren't like the cases now.

They were pretty closed up with comparatively poor airflow, an 80 or 92mm exhaust fan and 80 or 92mm intake fan. Some may have been making a transition to 120mm fans but generally had a single intake and single exhaust fan, no venting in the back, bottom, top or anywhere else. In addition most had a fixed set of drive bays in front of the only intake fan filled with smaller capacity mechanical drives, optical media drives, floppy drives etc which restricted airflow.

Compared to a more modern case which if it has a side panel fan is more aimed at providing cooler fresh air to the gpu. Many cases have 2-3 intake fans up front, may have a bottom vent with or without fan, top vents, 120-140mm rear exhaust fan, vented pcie slot covers and additional perforated vents alongside the pcie slots for better overall case ventilation. That along with removable drive bays and better cable management means much better airflow throughout modern cases.

A stock cooler would be fine without a side vent unless the case is extremely old and restricted. As SR-71 Blackbird pointed out, there are low profile aftermarket coolers like the c7 which would be better than the stock cooler and should fit in even smaller cramped cases.
