Hello everyone,

Before I get started, specs of my desktop are as follows:

Processor - Intel i7 4770
Motherboard - Asrock H87M
Power Supply Unit - Thermaltake LitePower 550W - LT-550CNAU
Operating System - Windows 10
Ethernet Controller - Qualcomm Atheros AR8171/8175 PCI-E Gigabit
Wireless - Asus USB-N10 150mbps 11n Wireless USB Dongle
Modem - Bob Lite
Internet Service Provider - iiNet
Other devices connected to network - 3 Laptops, 1 desktop, 3 phones (usually 1 laptop, 1 desktop, 2 phones - but my sister is here)

I've recently run into a problem where I've turned on my sister's two laptops (both using wireless) to transfer data to her new one. On the old laptop, it said something about there being an IP address conflict with another computer on the network. This is the first time this laptop has showed me this message, even though my sister has been here with the laptop before with no internet issues. It didn't offer any troubleshooting steps, so I clicked close and carried on with my data transfer.

Now, I was using my desktop (LAN connection) at the time this all happened, and after seeing that message, the internet on my desktop was VERY slow. I'm talking worse than dial-up speed here.

So I went upstairs and reset the modem, came back down and saw that I was not connected to the internet anymore on my desktop. Troubleshooting revealed that "Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration", but that it couldn't fix it. I had to plug in a wireless USB dongle to connect via wireless on my desktop.

The things I've tried so far include:

- Running ipconfig /release and renew - which gets me the following - https://gyazo.com/1c5f127e5c3982fe7571f782d8f1da54

- Running netsh int ip reset - which gets me the following - https://gyazo.com/d922381e115b584a62694cc9816a38d1

- Checking device manager to see if there were any issues with the ethernet adapters - there was not.

- Updated all drivers (already had the most up-to-date)

- Performing a system restore to a time when the LAN was working (didn't work)

- Disabling Avast anti-virus (didn't work)

- Starting windows in safe mode with networking (didn't work)

Short of doing a full re-installation of W10, i'm out of ideas.

Not sure if it helps, but we had an electrician in a week or so ago and he added an extra LAN cable for out smart TV, though the internet was working fine after that, so I don't see how that would affect it.

Please, if anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate some assistance.

Kind regards,

Jim.

Have you

- checked the lights on the LAN ports on both the PC and modem/router for an indication of connectivity?
- checked the LAN port on the modem/router is working (used another computer on the same LAN port), or tried a different port?
- unplugged all other devices from the modem router while testing with your PC only?

Okay, so....I'm going to sound like the biggest idiot, but I was just cleaning under my desk, and noticed my router, which is usually invisible in daily use (hence why I didn't list a router). Anyway, I made sure the two LAN cables were seated correctly, and they were. Still no internet. Then I pulled them both out, and moved them each one port over....and I now have internet.

The hours of frustration.......and all I needed to do was change ports on my router. Colour me embarrassed!

Thank you for your reply anyway!
