Hello all,

I am looking for some advice on putting together two separate HTPCs for two different rooms in the house. I keep a lot of movies on external HDDs and I already have a pair of Blu Ray players for optical media. I also sometimes use the wireless network to watch Youtube. I've never watched anything in a higher resolution that 1080p, but I suppose some future-proofing (4K?) wouldn't be a silly idea.

I'm really trying to keep the cost down but quietness and a small form factor is also a consideration.

I've put together a build on PC Part Picker:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD A8-7600 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($105.99 @ Mwave Australia)
Motherboard: Asus A88XM-A Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard ($105.00 @ Scorptec)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($68.20 @ Newegg Australia)
Storage: Sandisk SSD PLUS 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($55.00 @ Shopping Express)
Case: Fractal Design Core 1100 MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($65.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Power Supply: Silverstone Strider Essential 500W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply ($63.00 @ IJK)
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WN781ND PCI-Express x1 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter ($15.00 @ Shopping Express)
Total: $477.19
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I've built systems before, but I don't know a lot about choosing the correct components, so a little help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also considering using Linux for the operating system instead of Windows. I've never used Linux before, but the idea of buying another two Windows licenses doesn't thrill me.

All input is greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Power supply is not good quality. Consider the Seasonic S12II 430 as a good budget alternative with much better quality.
Case depends very much on where you will put the PC. I have the Silverstone GD04 so that it sits in the entertainment unit like an AV receiver. Looks good and very quiet. The only thing I don't like is that the filters are a pain to clean, but on the upside it has filters on all intakes.

I would also say, don't buy every part from the cheapest retailer. Pick one if you can that has all the parts you want at a reasonable price. ARC, UMART and PCCASEGEAR are all good.
