History:
I'm going to be breathing some new life into my laptop, which is about three years old now. This is currently my everything PC; it needs to last me a bit longer. I'm putting a plan together to finally build a new desktop PC. I'm sure I'll be posting to questions to the appropriate parts of the forums before long regarding that. However, it will be a while yet before I can put that particular plan into action.

Current Plan:
I'm planning to replace its main (mechanical) drive with a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB. I'm also planning to add a WD Black 5TB + Inateck Aluminum USB 3.0 Hard Disk Drive Enclosure as a backup system. I'm also going to update its cooling ability with an
Opolar LC06 Laptop Fan with Temperature Display and Cooling Pads;
a Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim Ultra-Slim Laptop Cooling Pad.

I'm posting here to ask your opinions and advice on my given choices for this quick, but enjoyable, endeavor.

Well, it is only 1TB. That's really not a lot of space. I wanted to get a larger one, but can't even begin to afford, or justify, that right now. I did also want to take advantage of the 1TB @ $250. I also am needing more space for future projects, to house some material for a time, before it's ultimately sent to backup archival. That's why I opted for a WD Black 5TB backup (also on sale currently @ Newegg) to get started with that in a good way, I think.

I guess when it comes down to it, I could cut that amount in half and just keep less on my main drive. However, I know myself well enough to know that I would just buy another ssd to add onto it in the future.

haha you know how many people i know who say 1Tb is not really a lot of space? Like maybe 3 or 4. Thats it XD

If you need it go for it! Will def get a very good speed bump. I have an older Dell Studio XPS 1640. Core 2 Do P8600 (2.4 @ 1066FSB) 8GB RAM, ATI HD 4670 1GB and i tossed in a 120GB SSD, got a caddy for my 750GB and put in the DVD bay (It was busted anyways) and got me a PCMIA Express USB 3.0 ports. Gave a whole new life to the laptop. I don't use it as much anymore but it is still good. I gamed on that thing over my desktop up until about 2-3 years ago when i bought a GTX480 off a friend.

Well, now, maybe four or five. ;)

Upgrading the USB ports is something I overlooked. I guess I could pop-in a PCIe card adapter to gain a couple 3.0 ports to fix that easily enough. I think that's about all that's left that I can do to the aging girl, sadly.
I'm ordering a monitor shortly, as soon as I finally decide on what I want. I'm really tempted to wait a bit, because I'm having an extremely hard time finding what I want within my price range right now.
So, she'll look prettier, have more storage and will be able to xfer via USB much faster; gain some much-needed archival space as well.
I think that'll see her through to "the end" nicely, depending on how long she sticks around.

That's what I'm hoping. It's finally shipping today, so not too much longer to wait. Thanks for your help by the way. :)
