Memory Speed - How much of an issue for...

Solution
There are very few games where RAM speed makes a difference. Battlefield 1 is an exception, I would consider this best case scenario for higher ram speeds and gaming. This benchmark was done with a gtx 1080 and i7 6700k, BF1 ultra preset.

It'll be use for media editing, an occasional 3D model or two, and yes, gaming. ;)

Thanks for the graph. It helps put things in perspective, to a point. I'm curious though, how that would change between 3.2, 3.3, 3.6 and 4k speeds. Would it be slightly higher than the 2.4k-3.2k gap, or something more akin to the 1.6k-2.4k gap, I wonder.

So, I guess it doesn't matter so much what speed I get, for gaming at least. I don't think it will matter a ton for most of my media work either. I'm not going to dip below the 3k speed anyhow, so... I think it'll be okay. :wahoo:

Thanks for the help guys!

Not sure. But if your into CPU overclocking I would suspect it would not be worth it. I have heard that venturing much past 3200mhz starts to affect cpu overclocks, so for gaming anyway a higher cloked cpu is almost always going to get you better performance than faster memory. In other applications like possibly your 3D modeling and editing programs RAM speed and RAM timings can have a large effect. But then again you start to have trade offs, the faster you make the ram the looser RAM timings are going to have to be, so its possible RAM at 4000mhz with loose timing could perfom worse than ram at 3200mhz with tighter timings, again depending on the application. I would try to find a good middle ground.

You certainly make some valid points. I need to look into how the RAM speed may affect CPU OCs and go from there. I'm more wondering what ends-up being the sweet spot. It very well could be 3.2k.
My priority is to maximize CPU speed first, memory second, of course. I simply don't want to short-change any aspect of the ratio, nor bog it down with needless extremities, beyond the scope of my needs.

I'll probably just grab some 3.2k when the time comes and call it a day. It seems like a good approach for me, for now. I know some tout 2.4k as no more than is needed for gaming, so that's fine. I just want a big extra, because I will end up needing it for other things. If it helps me stave-off a mobo+CPU upgrade for just a bit longer later on, it'll be worth the small difference.

Now, to just decide on a definite type of memory, ugh. :na:

I was set, in my mind, on Corsair Dominator Platinum, but now, I'm not so sure. I don't doubt it's quite good, but I think there may be better, in terms of performance, out there, that are also a bit cheaper.
