Hi everyone

I am trying so put together a list of components for a pc to be used mainly for Photoshop and some video editing. I am in doubt between a i5-6500 and a i5-6600k. As per the benchmark below, it looks like there is a huge difference, but I am not sure if the benchmark for the 6600k has been done with overclocking or the plain CPU.. as I do not plan to overclock for the time being, it would make a difference. can you help? Thanks in advance

Solution
The 6700K should last the longest but only marginally longer than a 6700, and the only real difference between the two is the ability to overclock and an extra ~100 pounds. If you're not going to overclock significantly, don't bother with a K CPU.
i5 6500 - 3.2ghz base, 3.6ghz max turbo (1 core)
i5 6600K - 3.5ghz base, 3.9ghz max turbo (1 core)

Aside from the K CPU being unlocked, they're identical aside from clockspeed, so you can directly compare performance using clockspeed. The 6600K is clocked 8-9% higher, and so you should expect 8-9% better performance.

Many thanks Mcnumpty & Ecky,
that really helps.

So now I tend to favor i5-6600k. BUt since for that CPU I need a Z170 motherboard. I am also thinking about moving to i7-6700k and make the whole system a bit more future proof.. maybe I would not need it now for photo & video editing, but maybe in the future...

You don't need a Z170 motherboard to run the 6600K, but it's kindof pointless without one since you need the Z170 chipset to overclock it. The 6700K should age better but is generally not necessary for running today's games smoothly.

You might also consider an i7 6700 and cheaper B150 or H170 board, it should be cheaper than the 6600K + Z170 + aftermarket cooler (K CPUs don't come with a cooler).

understood. Many thanks for your comments.
Now I need to decide between the following configurations:
- H170 + i5-6500
- Z170 + i5-6600k
- Z170 + i7-6700
- Z170 + i7-6700k

Budget should not be a problem (+/- 100 pounds), but I'd like to get something future-proof (hence why I chose Z170 for most configs) but that also makes sense now. I will let you know what I decide :) Thanks again!

Don't forget to factor the cooler into the overall price when considering the k series, both the i5 6600k and i7 6700k come with just the cpu, no stock cooler. Assuming you go with a k series and a z170 board you'll probably be considering overclocking which needs a better aftermarket cooler than the stock one anyway. However if you intend to get a 6600k/6700k and plan to run it at stock and overclock it later, you'll still need an aftermarket cooler regardless. They don't ship with any cooler to hold you over in the meantime.
