Hi all,

Christmas wish list includes the need to be able to play Star Citizen after upgrading my son's desktop we built 2 years ago. I want something that may last at least 2 years. So, I am looking at the following: an asterisk (*) means I already have it and would like to keep it...

Approximate Purchase Date: this week

Budget Range: 1000

System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming, music, videos, homework...

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: GPU/CPU

Do you need to buy OS: No
Please note that if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg.com

Location: Washington

Parts Preferences: Intel and EVGA

Overclocking: Yes

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Additional Comments: I would like to reuse as much as possible.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: to play Star Citizen

Include a list of any parts you have already selected with descriptively labeled links for parts. Please do not post only links:

We already have the keyboard, mouse and speakers with monitor.

NOTE: had the wrong MB listed. I verified the correct one today, sorry.

So, do you all feel this would be a decent build for Star Citizen and other similar games? I already have windows 10. Thanks!

Solution
Looks good, though couple of things to be said:

For the GPU, get a GTX 1070 FTW instead of the Hybrid if the price is comparable. Water cooling on the card looks good, but in reality the reliability of air cooling is preferable to the minuscule improvement the Hybrid offers.

For the SSD, go for an OCZ Trion 150 or Samsung 750 Evo instead. The Kingston UV400 is really an entry level SSD and I wouldn't trust it in terms of reliability.

Thank you for the valuable advice. I will note that and make changes. I changed the MB, but I don't feel it would take away from your advice.

arrrr, now i am stumped after looking at a comparison of the CPU to the Skylake versions. It appears that the i5-6600K would be a better cpu than the i7-4770K as it runs cooler than the latter. However, it is a 1151 versus 1150 mb (of which I already have). I don't want to have to replace the MB and the RAM to fit this cpu, but I also don't want waste money on rebuilding a system that is not gonna make everyone happy in a year... or for that game he wants...
