Just bought a beast (I think) PC and monitor - need advice

I am somewhat of a PC noob, so I'm wondering if this setup really is something to be proud of. I bought it earlier today and have only played lord of the rings online, which ran smoothly and looked great.

I also ran DOTA 2 and this games options menu has a graphics section that gives you 4 options starting at 'fastest speed' and ending at 'best looking'

When I choose one of the bottom 3 options the game runs incredibly fast but when I choose the best option there is some slight but noticeable lag.

I feel like I should not be experiencing any lag with my setup? Especially when dealing with a low stress game like DOTA?

Is there more I can be doing to maximize my rig? I paid a lot of money and was really hoping to just select "ultra high quality" on every game I play. I even went way above my budget to get this monitor that has the 'g sync' thing.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Yes those are very good specs, DOTA 2 should have no issues even at max settings, it my just be a game issue. The 1080 will be able to run 144hz at 1440 resolution in any game although at Ultra in all it may be not perfectly smooth.

Completely awesome system. I just built my own beast after running a low budget system for years. What I started doing is displaying my FPS in the upper right corner of Steam so I can see what I get. So far Fallout 4 completely maxed at ultra has yet to drop below 59 and almost always sits at 60. Same with almost everything else. The only game I'm seeing drops in is GTA 5 maxed out. But I'm not runing an i7/GTX1080 setup like you so you shouldn't see the drops I see. And you can't judge lags in a game like DOTA since it could be network latency more than anything else.

DOTA 2 might be turning on V-Sync. Turn that off and you should be golden.
If not that, it could be the network. Typing "-ping" in chat will reveal your latency in MS.
