HI,

I have recently taken over in the IT department at a new company, and for the first time I'm a bit stumped with the internet side of things.

I have always been used to a broadband connection within all the comapanies I have worked in. However, this one has an "etherway" connection which then connects via "etherflow". I've done a bit of research, but I cannot really find the benefit with etherway now that broadband has developed and grown as much as it has.

Can anyone tell me the main difference or benefits that etherway has over broadband, if any? Also if it's worth me switching from etherway to broadband. (oh and if i am getting this all wrong, then just dumb it down for me lol because i'm confused as hell)

You need to read the contractual stuff. I suspect there are more bandwidth guarantees on your connection unlike broadband where you get the standard "UP TO" disclaimer. It likely has much better service level agreements for restoration of service.

Although it is not called etherway this appears a pretty standard MPLS offering from most ISP. You would generally do this if you had multiple office and wanted a private connection between them with a guaranteed bandwidth and latency. Many ISP offer the ability to connect internet via the same connection.

I suspect the main reason you would want to go to a normal broadband connection is if their is a large price difference and you do not need the extra features the etherway allows.

if its anything like in the uk

it must be a good sized company to need it--or prices are much much lower where you are

typical cost here would be to instal fttp (fibre to the premises) around £3500

monthly cost around £450

its sort of like

you have 1 superfast fibre connection to say your office

that can then get split into multiple ethernet connections to various buildings/departments on site

it can also be split into what you would broadly call broadband to for example all the companies directors homes by looping

back into the phone system

not really sure how to explain it if thats not clear
