I got a deal from a friend. He said he would sell me his HP Compaq 8200 Elite Mini Tower for $130. So what I was going to do is upgrade it. I want to put a GPU in there so I can have a second backup rig just in case. What else do I need to upgrade the computer successfully and get the results I want? (My friend is selling me the computer with all the components but the power cable. The PSU has a 320 watt capacity) S0, the main question is, what do I need to buy/do to maximize my PC experience and successfully install the GPU and get results?

Solution

This is an sff system that means that only low profile gpu's will fit in there (the best you'll get is a gtx 750). 130 isn't a bad deal at all but to actually game on that system you'll need to do as 1 of my friends did. Saw a hole in the sidepanel and but a good gpu in there. Of course if a gtx 50 is enough for you then go for it.

Saw a hole in the side panel? Can I just take it off and put the GPU in the PCI slot?

If you want to do it the easy way :p. Still if you do that the best gpu you'll be able to get with that hp is a gtx 1050 or rx 460.

Thanks buddy! Also another question: Will the 750 ti work? And will it be able to fit even though the case is a bit slimmer?

Only low profile gpu's will fit so if you find a gtx 750 ti low profile like this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125680

then you should be able to close the case. Otherwise you'll have an open pc.
