i5 2500 not K and upgrading from R9 380 4g to GTX 1070 for 4K gaming.

I'm trying to achieve 4k@60 fps gaming. At least 40+fps at 4k.
Should I upgrade from R9 380 4g to GTX 1070 ? or that would be a waste of money considering the 5-year-old i5 2500 CPU that can not be overclocked?
Do I have to change the whole rig? which I'm really trying to avoid.
Will this CPU significantly limit the card's performance or I'll be losing only a few frames per second?

Overall am I going to gain any noticeable improvements even on 2k or 1080 on this machine only by upgrading to GTX 1070?

I also have 4 CORSAIR XMS 4G DDR3 1600 ram but it seems like their frequency never goes beyond 800MHZ.

Glad to hear everything is working!

As far as your power supply, you should be fine for overclocking. Not sure of the 1080 that you have, but a few I looked at only recommend 500W of system power. That leaves you with a pretty nice amount of overhead for overclocking the 1080 and your cpu if you want to. Just bare in mind that the Pascal gpus already boost pretty high on their own so I wouldn't expect to get too much extra out of it.

4K shows some gains with an i7 - more for the CPU to send to the GPU, I guess. An i5-2500 (non-K) would likely hold back a GTX 1070 too much to make it a worthwhile upgrade. For 4K, you'll want a minimum i5-6600K IMO, although an i7-6700K could show some benefit.

A single 1070 isn;t going to be a 60FPS @ 4K card regardless of the CPU. SLI 1070's might do it on titles that support SLI. Even a GTX 1080 might struggle for consistent 60FPS @ 4K on high settings.

Sorry, but I think you'd be wasting your money. a 1070 isn't going to push 60 fps on 4k unless you're playing some outdated/non-demanding games. Even a 1080 can't do 60 fps on the newest titles. At least not if your goal is to push the highest settings.

The cpu is another issue. You're more than likely going to bottleneck. The only way I'd invest in a new gpu right now is if you plan on upgrading everything in the near-ish future. But by then even better cards will be out that will handle 4k better.

In titles where the GPU is doing most of the work, absolutely. Even with a moderate CPU requirement you'll see improvements. It's only going games with a balance of CPU & GPU intensive requirements that the 2500 will hold you back significantly.

Oh for sure. A 1070 might be overkill for 1080p unless you're shooting for high 120+ fps, but it's perfectly suited for 1440p!

Ok what do you think about i7-6700k and a Asus z170 MB upgrade from what I have?
I'm trying to go shop the parts before stores close here, they have good deals today i7-6700 for $260 and z170 for $119
and 1070 for $419 no deal for the card tho.
Does this sound like a machine that could run the games on 4k with at leas 30 stable frames per second? high settings tho not very extreme or ultra

An i7* + 1070 should have a good chance of stable playable FPS, 30FPS is probably a reasonable expectation. A 1080 would get you nearer your 60FPS, but for a huge price difference.

*While an i7 shows some gains at 4K, an i5-6600K would pair pretty nicely with a 1070 too. Would be a solid high-ultra setup at 1440p, so 30FPS, even with the i5 should be somewhat achievable at 4K.. although the i7 would be the better buy long-term.

Thanks a lot for your replies!
I bought a whole new rig
I7 6700k
GTX 1080
Asus maximus VIII ranger Z170

But now there is a problem, when I put the GTX 1080 in pcie-x16 I don't get anything on the screen, no signal!
but when I put it in pcie-x8 everything just works fine. Do you have any idea what could be causing it?

Hmmm...on my motherboard there is a little set of toggles to turn pci slot functionality on or off, but I don't see the same thing on yours.

According to the product listing on Newegg it says that it has 3 PCI-e x 16 lanes, so refer to the manual if you haven't already to confirm that the second slot is really the x8 you're reporting.

There's also the possibility that you were unfortunate enough to receive a motherboard with a dead slot. If you have an older gpu you could throw that in just to see if it works. If it doesn't I'd say that you should RMA the board.

Congrats on the new build! It'll be a killer when it's up an going!

Thanks man.
I installed the windows and the GPU drivers then put the graphics card back into the 3 PCI-e x 16 and it worked! I'm not sure what was the problem but it seems like installing the windows and drivers before putting the card on the MB helped.

Now another question I want to OC this machine and I have RM750i power supply, do you think that this power supply can handle the OC?
And how much FPS am I going to gain OCing for 4k ? does it worth it ?
